Jeanette Barnes

ARTIST STATEMENT
I use drawing to document the development of urban environments. Over the years I have worked mainly in London from the City and Docklands sites. Working on the spot, I gather sufficient information to develop major pieces back in the studio. Although I enjoy drawing architecture and excavation works, it is people that bring these settings to life. Sometimes they are a focal point or of implied presence. I like to use their movement as a metaphor for energy within the city and passage of time. Over a number of years, my work has changed, moving from intense and claustrophobic pieces, the charcoal used atmospherically giving richness and depth, to airier pieces taking on larger areas concerned with spatial depth and evolution. Recently I have begun to work on a series of drawings of New York, I have become fascinated with the energy and architecture there. Working mainly from drawings, but also through necessity from photographs, which is a new departure for me and has taken my work in a somewhat different direction, I have enjoyed immersing myself in the vibrancy of a new city.
